The body, system by system
The organs and bones of the body can be grouped into systems: sets of structures that work together. Choose a system to find each of its organs and parts in the 3D body.
Nervous system
The nervous system divides into the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nerves that branch out from it to the whole body. It takes in sensation, weighs it and sends signals to muscles and organs to control movement and many body functions. In BAHI BODY you can view the brain inside the skull and its parts in 3D.
Cardiovascular system
The cardiovascular system is made up of the heart and the blood vessels: arteries, veins and capillaries. Blood pumped by the heart travels through the pulmonary circulation to the lungs and the systemic circulation to the rest of the body before returning to the heart, carrying oxygen and nutrients and collecting carbon dioxide and waste. In BAHI BODY you can view the heart’s four chambers and four valves, the aorta and the pulmonary trunk, the venae cavae and the great arteries of the neck and arms.
Respiratory system
The respiratory system is the airway that starts at the nose and mouth and runs through the pharynx, larynx and trachea into the bronchi and lungs. In the alveoli deep in the lungs, oxygen passes into the blood and carbon dioxide passes out. The diaphragm beneath the chest works with the lungs to draw breath in and out. In BAHI BODY you can view the trachea and the bronchial branches of each lung, lobe by lobe.
Digestive system
The digestive system is made up of the digestive tract running from mouth to anus (oesophagus, stomach, small and large intestine) and the liver, gallbladder and pancreas, which make digestive juices and send them into the tract. Food is broken down as it moves along the tract; nutrients and water are absorbed and what remains leaves as stool.
Urinary system
The urinary system is made up of the two kidneys, the ureters, the bladder and the urethra. The kidneys filter blood into urine, which runs down the ureters to collect in the bladder and leaves the body through the urethra. The kidneys also help keep the body’s water and electrolyte balance.
Skeletal system
The skeletal system, made of bones, cartilage and ligaments, supports the body, protects organs such as the brain, heart and lungs, and works with the muscles to produce movement. Blood cells are made in the bone marrow.
