The body, in connection.
BAHI BODY is a 3D human body built from real anatomical data (BodyParts3D). Turn 10 organs, 47 parts and 203 bones and see where each sits in the body.
Organs
- Brain: The brain sits inside the skull and divides into the cerebrum, cerebellum and brainstem. It is the centre of the nervous system, taking in sensation and governing thought, memory and movement.
- Heart: The heart is a muscular organ in the middle of the chest, slightly to the left, between the lungs. With two atria, two ventricles and four valves it pumps blood to the lungs and the rest of the body.
- Lungs · airways: The lungs are the breathing organs on either side of the chest. Air passes down the trachea, splits into the bronchi and travels deep into the lungs, where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged. The right lung has three lobes, the left two. This model shows the trachea and bronchial tree.
- Liver: The liver, in the upper right of the abdomen under the ribs, is the largest internal organ. It processes and stores nutrients and makes bile, which collects in the gallbladder before passing into the small intestine.
- Stomach: The stomach is a pouch in the upper left of the abdomen, below the diaphragm. It mixes food arriving from the oesophagus with gastric juice and passes it on to the small intestine.
- Pancreas: The pancreas lies crosswise deep in the abdomen, behind the stomach. It makes digestive enzymes for the duodenum and releases hormones such as insulin and glucagon.
- Spleen: The spleen sits in the upper left of the abdomen, behind the stomach and under the ribs. It filters the blood, clears old red cells and is a lymphatic organ where immune cells gather.
- Kidneys: The kidneys are a pair of bean-shaped organs at waist height, either side of the spine towards the back. They filter blood into urine, which runs down the ureters to the bladder. The adrenal glands sit on top of them.
- Small intestine: The small intestine is the long tube between the stomach and the large intestine, running through the duodenum, jejunum and ileum. Most digestion and nutrient absorption happen here.
- Large intestine: The large intestine starts where the small intestine ends, wraps around the abdomen and leads to the rectum. Through the ascending, transverse and descending colon it absorbs water and forms stool.
