Leg anatomy, hip to foot
The leg, or lower limb, runs from the hip to the toes and has 31 bones on each side. The hip bone attaches it to the trunk, the femur forms the thigh, the tibia and fibula form the lower leg, and the patella sits at the front of the knee. The foot has seven tarsal bones, five metatarsals and fourteen phalanges, and the hip, knee and ankle are the main joints.
Frequently asked questions
How many bones are in the leg?
Each leg has 31 bones: the hip bone, femur, patella, tibia and fibula, plus the 26 bones of the foot. The two legs together have 62.
What is the longest bone in the body?
The femur, the thigh bone. It is the longest and strongest bone, forming the hip joint with the hip bone above and the knee joint with the tibia below.
What is the largest joint in the body?
The knee joint. It is where three bones meet: the femur, the tibia and the patella.
