Randomized human trials1
48 patients with chronic wounds requiring negative pressure wound care were randomized across multiple centers to added hyperbaric oxygen (24) or negative pressure care alone (24); wound size changes, pain scores and bacterial contamination were compared.
JPRAS Open · 2025 · PMID 40502361
Human studies without a control group3
A case report of 1 man aged 61 with a chronic thigh wound after a spider bite receiving excision, skin grafting, negative pressure wound care and hyperbaric oxygen, monitored with photographs and microperfusion measurements.
J Clin Med · 2026 · PMID 41598629
A case series of 6 patients with persistent chronic wounds receiving hyperbaric oxygen; laser speckle imaging measured perfusion in healthy skin, wound margins and wound beds before and after sessions.
Int Wound J · 2026 · PMID 42830258
A case report of 1 woman aged 75 with Cogan syndrome, pyoderma gangrenosum and a nonhealing surgical wound, documenting antibiotics, debridement and steroids followed by 4 cyclophosphamide infusions and hyperbaric oxygen.
Skin Health Dis · 2025 · PMID 40124997
Reviews and literature analyses8
A narrative review of 11 screened studies of hyperbaric oxygen and conventional care across chronic wound types, covering measures such as wound area, closure, pain and quality of life. Total participant count is not reported in the abstract.
Cureus · 2025 · PMID 41116954
A scoping review of 54 clinical and 45 preclinical studies of gas based approaches to chronic wounds, searching Medline, Embase and Scopus for hyperbaric oxygen, topical gases and gas delivery formulations. Total participant count is not reported in the abstract.
Eur J Pharm Biopharm · 2025 · PMID 41106558
A review of clinical research and application conditions for hyperbaric oxygen in chronic wounds including diabetic foot wounds. The abstract does not report the number of included papers or total participants.
Ther Umsch · 2025 · PMID 41569276
A systematic review of 18 studies involving 1,281 patients in plastic surgery indications including wounds, grafts and flaps; 786 received hyperbaric oxygen and 495 did not, across observational studies, case series and randomized trials.
Plast Reconstr Surg Glob Open · 2026 · PMID 42559634
A review of glucose and lipid related literature and management approaches in chronic diabetic wounds, discussing hyperbaric oxygen alongside drugs, dressings and negative pressure wound care. The abstract does not report the number of included papers or total participants.
Metabol Open · 2025 · PMID 41321406
A literature review of chronic wounds in irradiated skin, examining approaches including hyperbaric oxygen, dermal substitutes and fat or plasma derived products, with animal studies and case reports. The abstract does not report the number of included papers or total participants.
Adv Wound Care (New Rochelle) · 2026 · PMID 41313654
A review of hyperbaric oxygen trials and meta-analyses in diabetic foot ulcers as one chronic wound type, also examining wound physiology and participant selection. The abstract does not report the number of included papers or total participants.
J Diabetes Complications · 2025 · PMID 39970800
A literature review of molecular mechanisms and management approaches for chronic diabetic wounds, including hyperbaric oxygen among several approaches. The abstract does not report the number of included papers or total participants.
Curr Diabetes Rev · 2026 · PMID 40511645
Animal studies1
Rats with diabetes received full thickness dorsal skin wounds and polymer hydrogel, hyperbaric oxygen or combined conditions; tissue, collagen, tensile strength, redox markers and gene expression were analyzed. Sample size is not reported in the abstract.

Are wounds other than diabetic foot ulcers included?
Yes. Cases and reviews also cover nonhealing surgical wounds, a chronic wound after a spider bite and wounds in irradiated skin.
What did the randomized groups receive?
In the 48 person study, 24 received negative pressure wound care plus hyperbaric oxygen and 24 received negative pressure care alone. It did not compare hyperbaric oxygen alone with no care.
Do papers overlap with the diabetic foot page?
Yes. Diabetic foot wounds can be chronic wounds, so some reviews appear on both pages. Adding the page counts would count those papers twice.
