Where the renal arteries are, in 3D

The renal arteries are paired arteries that branch off the abdominal aorta to carry blood to the kidneys. One runs to each side and enters its kidney at the hilum, the notch on its inner border. They usually arise at about the level of the disc between the first and second lumbar vertebrae, just below the superior mesenteric artery. At the hilum each artery lies behind the renal vein and in front of the renal pelvis.

Frequently asked questions

Which body system do the renal arteries belong to?

The renal arteries belong to the cardiovascular system. The cardiovascular system is made up of the heart and the blood vessels: arteries, veins and capillaries.

What else can you see alongside the renal arteries?

The BAHI BODY 3D model of the kidneys also shows the right kidney, left kidney, adrenal glands, ureters and bladder.

Where are the kidneys?

The kidneys are a pair of bean-shaped organs at waist height, either side of the spine towards the back.

Which renal artery is longer, the right or the left?

The right one. The aorta lies slightly left of the midline, so the right renal artery travels farther and passes behind the inferior vena cava.
